Name That Stone - Charoite
I LOVE Charoite. It is such a stunning stone (say that 3 times fast) with such amazing color and depth. It has an almost mother of pearl finish of irridescent design.
I seem to fall in love with stones that are fairly rare and hard to find. I managed to purchase some absolutely outstanding beads while in Tucson this year. I made a watch and earrings for someone and nothing since. Which is silly because the stones are so spectacular.
Discovered by the West in 1978 (hey, my birth year!), Charoite is found only in Russia along the Charo River. And actually, Russians are said to have discovered it as early as 1947. This part of Russia is desolate and was once a place where political prisoners were exiled. Experts aren't entirely sure why it is only found in one location, but speculate that it is due to a unique combination of unique limestone and physical conditions in the area. It's color can be white, lilac, lavender, violet, and purple. The darker the purple color and the more irridescent opal like tone the higher the quality. It really is an amazing stone.
And if you believe that stones have healing powers Charoite is said to give courage in order to overcome fears. I do like this quote though "It survived great trauma, rains, winds, heat and cold, only to become more beautiful over time." Isn't that just like life? An inspiring stone regardless.
